William Larwill journal, 1800-1828.

The journal of William Larwill contains holograph copies of poetry and prose. One end of the book contains works on law, including extracts from Blackstone's Commentaries. At the other end are addresses of Nov. 22, 1799 to and by Pennsylvania governor-elect Thomas McKean, and of Feb 20, 1801 to and by president-elect Thomas Jefferson; an oration by Samuel Whelpley in Morris Town, New Jersey, July 4, 1800; and other works copied or authored by Larwill as late as 1828. Of note is an epitaph for an Indian chief and Larwill's account of traveling six weeks in the winter from 1802-1803 from Pittsburgh with nine Indian representatives to Washington to see President Jefferson regarding their ill treatment by William Henry Harrison at a council at Kaskaskia.

William C. Larwill came with his family to America in 1793, living in Philadelphia and moving to Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1793. In 1802 he came to Columbiana County, Ohio, served as Fawcettstown's first postmaster, and was admitted to the bar in 1803. In 1814 he moved to Wooster in Wayne County, Ohio.
